Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition
The FPMT is an organization devoted to preserving and spreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwide by creating opportunities to listen, reflect, meditate, practice and actualize the unmistaken teachings of the Buddha and based on that experience spreading the Dharma to sentient beings. We provide integrated education through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed into their highest potential for the benefit of others, inspired by an attitude of universal responsibility and service. We are committed to creating harmonious environments and helping all beings develop their full potential of infinite wisdom and compassion. Our organization is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa of Tibet as taught to us by our founders Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche.

If your path teaches you to act and exert yourself correctly and leads to spiritual realizations such as love, compassion and wisdom then obviously it’s worthwhile.

Khen Rinpoche Geshe Thubten Chonyi’s Story and the History of Kopan
Opportunities and Changes within the Organization:
Lama Zopa Rinpoche:
Inspirational Thought Transformation Teachings Continue
This month Rinpoche continued his video teachings on thought transformation from Kopan Monastery in Nepal. Recent topics include: the reality that death is going to happen to you; and the time to practice is now since we don’t know when we will die.
Every single word Buddha taught is to subdue the mind, Rinpoche reminds us. The way to do that is by meditating on death and impermanence. This destroys the concept of permanence, which makes anger, attachment, and all problems arise. Remembering death and impermanence is also the basis for lojong (thought transformation). You can die at anytime, so it’s best to practice now!
Advice on a Range of Topics

We’re Rejoicing About:
Support to Schools in India and Nepal
Since 2012, our Social Services Fund has been offering substantial support to various schools in India and Nepal that are offering education to students of Tibetan, Nepali, and Indian heritage. Investing in education through schools is one way to help break the cycle of poverty in impoverished areas and we are pleased to offer support to nearly 1,000 children each year. Since 2012, over US$1,042,644 has been offered to these schools and institutions. We invite you to learn about these various programs and how our grants have impacted their work.
A New Meditation Resource
We bring you the audio recording A Brief Meditation-Recitation on Guru Medicine Buddha as an MP3 download bundled with supporting digital materials, available in the Foundation Store. In this recording, ten audio tracks have been extracted from the video “Your Generating Bodhichitta Helps Every Sentient Being and Lung of a Short Medicine Buddha Practice,” which is part of the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Teachings on Thought Transformation series.
Khen Rinpoche Geshe Thubten Chonyi’s Story and the History of Kopan
Khen Rinpoche Geshe Thubten Chonyi is abbot of Kopan Monastery and Kopan Nunnery, the FPMT monastic institutions in Kathmandu, Nepal; and resident geshe at Amitabha Buddhist Centre, the FPMT center in Singapore. Mandala’s recent online story “A Deep Interest in Study: Khen Rinpoche Geshe Thubten Chonyi’s Story and the History of Kopan,” tells of Khen Rinpoche’s unique and fascinating experience from when he was a boy in the Solu Khumbu District of Nepal to being a monk at Kopan in the 1970s, to becoming the abbot of Kopan Monastery. His story is very inspiring, and also sheds light on an essential part of the FPMT organization.
