A magnificent Stupa of Complete Victory is being built for Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. The stupa stands 42 feet high (12.8 meters) and is encircled by 32 smaller stupas. Beneath the main stupa is a large meditation hall, and below that are private meditation rooms.

About the Stupa

The stupa is located on the northeast side of the Stupa Garden at Kopan Monastery, where the stupas of Geshe Lama Konchog and Khensur Rinpoche Lama Lhundup are situated. This stupa is facing exactly mid-way between Swayambhunath and Boudhanath. To maintaining the vastness of Kopan’s beautiful gardens, Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s stupa is being built from the level below thus enlarging the whole area and enabling two retreat rooms under the stupa. The architect working on this project has integrated the circumambulation path to go around all three stupas and incorporating the whole area as a place for purification and creating merit.

Construction Progress

Construction began in October 2023 with a groundbreaking ceremony and prayers, and the actual building commenced in January 2024. By October 2024 the stupa had reached the vase level, and in January 2025 the many precious and holy objects were placed inside, including the Kangyur and Tengyur, the life tree positioned at the center of the stupa, forty trillion mantras inscribed on nanotechnology film, and various other sacred items. The following months were devoted to the intricate and beautiful decorations of the stupa, the gompa, and the meditation rooms below.

The Origin of the Stupa

On the 49th day after Lama Zopa Rinpoche showed the aspect of passing, His Eminence Zong Rinpoche came to Kopan Monastery to offer prayers for Rinpoche’s swift return. He kindly offered guidance on the type of stupa to build, advising that it be a Stupa of Complete Victory — which represents the Buddha’s victory over the mara of death.

The total cost of the project is approximately US$935,890, as estimated by the local Nepali architectural firm undertaking the work. The major expenses include the civil works required to prepare the ground — excavation and building up from the lower level — as well as the construction of the stupa, its decorative painting and ornamentation, and the construction and installation of the 32 smaller surrounding stupas.
