Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition
The FPMT is an organization devoted to preserving and spreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwide by creating opportunities to listen, reflect, meditate, practice and actualize the unmistaken teachings of the Buddha and based on that experience spreading the Dharma to sentient beings. We provide integrated education through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed into their highest potential for the benefit of others, inspired by an attitude of universal responsibility and service. We are committed to creating harmonious environments and helping all beings develop their full potential of infinite wisdom and compassion. Our organization is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa of Tibet as taught to us by our founders Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche.
- Willkommen

May everybody realize bodhichitta, the good heart, enjoy peace and happiness and as quickly as possible realize the wisdom directly perceiving emptiness, cease all their defilements and achieve enlightenment.

Supporting Sangha

Supporting monks and nuns has always been one of the highest priorities for Lama Zopa Rinpoche and the FPMT organization, because the preservation of Buddhadharma is dependent on the existence of Sangha. The Supporting Ordained Sangha Fund offers support to many monasteries and nunneries—and to individual monks and nuns—for food, accommodation, health care, and education and practice opportunities. Recent grants we have made from this fund have benefited the nuns of Tashi Chime Gatsal Nunnery in Nepal and the monks of Idgaa Choizinling Dratsang in Mongolia, where we have offered the mid-day meal since 2003.
Mandala’s Newest Online Feature Stories
“The Benefits of Monasteries and Nunneries,” Mandala’s online feature story for May, explores why formal institutions for ordained Sangha are necessary, especially in this modern age. Drawing from advice given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche and from an essay by Ven. Tenzin Legtsok, an American monk in the geshe studies program at Sera Je Monastic University, the articles outlines how lay students and ordained alike are helped by monastic institutions.
In April, Mandala published “In the Footsteps of Atisha: A Pilgrimage to Vikramashila,” a first-person account by Annie McGhee of a visit to the ruins of the ancient Indian monastic university where Lama Atisha lived and taught. Ladakhi Lama, a former attendant of the great Khunu Lama Rinpoche, led the pilgrimage from Root Institute in Bodhgaya to Vikramashila, which along with Nalanda, was for centuries one of the most important centers of Buddhist learning.
