On January 28, the Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom (FDCW) hosted a talk by Tenzin Ösel Hita on “Educating the Heart.”
“And what a sweet treat it was,” said FDCW student Esther Garibay. “The last time I had the opportunity to spend time with Ösel was precisely at the 2011 Universal Education gathering, where he was mostly filming what later became the Being Your True Nature film. So I hadn’t really had an opportunity to hear him talk. Before the talk I felt curious and excited to hear this person I have been following on Facebook for years, but don’t really know that well.
“The atmosphere was electric as people gathered at the Jamyang lobby in expectation. Once the introductions were over and Ösel started to speak, I felt as if a magnet had pulled my attention toward him. His style is so direct and personal. Filled with anecdotes, stories, and wisdom that felt so relevant to my life and today’s world.
“The talk started with a short meditation on gratefulness. ‘Everyday of our life, every morning that we wake up is like a rebirth, so everyday is a new life … but do we ever thank our heart or our lungs? Are we aware of the work they do?’ Ösel asked.
“With lightness and humor Ösel connected so easily to people, leading the talk as a conversation and inviting people to comment and answer questions. He covered such a wide range of themes: urban live, everyday kindness, forgiveness, inner values, the self-cherishing mind, and self-love, to name a few. He introduced us to the concept of inner gold: the more we have, the more we receive, and when we share it, that gold multiplies. And we don’t have to be afraid of losing it as it can’t be take from us.
“He ended the talk on the importance of believing in our potential and the importance of compassion: ‘If we have compassion then we would have no problems. Through compassion we can really transform problems. It is very important to have the wisdom but also the method, and that is what FDCW does, it brings out the compassion, the empathy we already have.’
“I felt so inspired and energized after his talk, and this sentiment was shared with every person I spoke to afterwards.”

An Update on Tenzin Ösel Hita
On October 21-22, Tenzin Ösel Hita attended teachings in Milan, Italy, with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His Holiness taught on Lama Tsongkhapa’s Three Principal Aspects of The Path and In Praise to Dependent Origination.
While in Italy Ösel gave a talk at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa which you can listen to in English or Italian. In this talk, Ösel explains, “Through spirituality and religion it has been discovered that when we want to help, when we want to give the best of ourselves to other people we receive more happiness and more joy. It is more fulfilling. And when our actions, our thoughts, our speech is based on self with the motivation of selfishness to make ourselves happy, to make us feel better and to fill us up, then the result always is suffering.”
In September, Ösel was in Spain and gave a wonderful talk at O.Sel.Ling’s outreach group in Gibraltar, which you can watch in Spanish on YouTube.
Ösel has recently been in India and gave a talk at Tushita Retreat Center and we look forward to updating all on his planned upcoming travels.
FPMT continues to support Ösel in all of his Dharma and educational endeavors through the Big Love Fund. All are welcome to be part of this offering.

Tenzin Ösel Hita Spends Time in Southeast Asia
Tenzin Ösel Hita recently spent time in Southeast Asia. In March he was in Singapore to attend the long life puja for Lama Zopa Rinpoche organized by Amitabha Buddhist Centre. He then traveled to Malaysia later in the month to receive the Most Secret Hayagriva initiation along with Gomo Tulku. In early April, Ösel went to Kuala Lumpur and had dinner with Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
While in Singapore and Malaysia Ösel and Gomo Tulku gave talks and engaged in Q & A sessions at Amitabha Buddhist Centre, Losang Dragpa Centre, and Chokyi Gyaltsen Center.
Last week, Ösel was in Japan to attend teachings with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and he commented that he was “so blessed and lucky” for this opportunity.
In April of 2015, Ösel led a pilgrimage to India and Nepal. During that pilgrimage they visited Tushita Meditation Centre and Ösel was kind enough to give a talk about his life, his experiences, and some lessons he has learned along his path. You can enjoy a clip of this talk on YouTube.
In this video clip Ösel says to those in attendance, “I am not a teacher, at all. I’m a student and I think I will always be a student. And I think we all have to learn together. So that’s what I am trying to do. Trying to learn from you and maybe you can learn from me. In just the same way that we learn from life, through everybody. From the moment we are born until the moment we die we are always learning.”
The full length recording of Ösel’s talk will be available on Rinpoche Available Now (RAN) soon in the “Tenzin Ösel Hita Videos” section.
FPMT continues to support Ösel in all of his Dharma and educational endeavors through the Big Love Fund. All are welcome to be part of this offering.

Compassion and Humility Are So Important
Tenzin Ösel Hita occasionally shares his insights and experiences on Facebook. Here Ösel discusses why compassion and humility are so important to put into practice:
People tend to judge others, especially when they don’t know much about them. We tend to jump to conclusions easily. It is easier to find fault in others than oneself. It is easier to blame the rest for our problems. That is where we have to really understand why compassion and humility are so important. Even though it hurts and it’s something that has followed us all our life since childhood, sometimes we have to understand that it’s not part of us, but the way the human mind works. As long as we keep a good motivation and are humble, compassionate and open to criticism in order to learn and improve; the pain will dissipate. Do not take the burden of others if it cannot help them. Do not take any burden if you can, only joy and lightness in your heart. Adapt and move on. Be positive, I say. Be happy, for we are alive and it’s a new day where we can all grow and love each other. Biglove life, feel it and live.
GranAmor vida, sentirla y vivirla.

Revive Nepal Project: Tenzin Ösel Hita Helps to Rebuild Nepal
Friends around the world recently observed Tenzin Ösel Hita’s 31st birthday on February 12. Ösel joined Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Khadro-la (Rangjung Neljorma Khadro Namsel Drönme) for a vegetarian momo lunch at Kopan Monastery the following day. Ösel is in Kathmandu at this time working on the Revive Nepal Project that is coordinating the reconstruction of sustainable public buildings and homes in areas of Nepal which are in urgent need of support following the devastating April 2015 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. Ösel was in Kathmandu during the earthquake and witnessed the incredible destruction and immediately wanted to do something to help and bring lasting benefit to the area.
Since the earthquake Ösel, Kike & Beatriz have been working on this project and after a very successful fundraising event in Spain, Revive Nepal Project is now actually beginning reconstruction on a primary school in the area of Masel and assessing the needs for water throughout the village. Revive Nepal is also working on offering education on bio-construction, sanitation and other needs. Everyone is doing the work free of charge and working directly on the ground with the villagers.

On February 19, Tenzin Ösel Hita, the recognized reincarnation of FPMT founder Lama Yeshe, made a surprise visit to Malaysian center Losang Dragpa Centre to participate in its Guru Puja for Losar, Tibetan New Year. Just before the puja began, Ösel gave a short talk and answered a few questions, which were transcribed by Carolyn Chan and edited by Yeo Puay Huei and Mandala for publication on FPMT.org. He began the question and answer portion saying, “I will try to answer as best as I can and if you have opposing views, then better still as we can then debate and understand better.”
Malaysia went through a lot of difficulties last year that affected a lot of young people too. The world is also seeing more terrorists. We get upset at all this, but at the same time, we are supposed to be like our guru. How do we gain a positive mind towards such harmful people?
Ösel: Very, very modern, ah. (Laughter) Very, very good question. To tackle this question, one point of view is the absolute bodhichitta mind. You slap me and I offer the other cheek. Then both of my cheeks will get red. Just joking.
One side is the bodhichitta mind where you give love even if you are beaten up. I think on the one hand, this is very good to do, but the extreme is not good. So, one has to put a limit. You can take the abuse up to one point and if you keep accepting this abuse, then it is not good for the abuser either. They might think they have the right to abuse people, and this will not help them. You are not really creating the cause for them to see their mistakes. If you always go, “OK, OK,” they keep doing the same. You have to cut the vicious pattern.
Some people say that the way to cut the cycle is to get more aggressive than the aggressor, in order to wake him up. But the solution to violence can never be violence. And even if you use aggressiveness to help the aggressor, it should come with love. It should be just a wake-up call for the aggressor. Everybody has their own point of view, but I think I would say that the solution to violence can never be violence. It leads to more suffering. My advice to you is to pray for the aggressor’s bad karma to clear away and for her to be able to recognize the fact that making other people suffer is bringing on more suffering for herself. For the one receiving the aggression, be aware of the need for balance. Don’t go to extremes. It is the middle path. That is what the lam-rim teaches.
Could you please share some insight about your predecessor? Have you seen your predecessor in your dreams?
Ösel: Actually, Lama Yeshe is my best friend. If it were not for him, I would probably work in a bar and be a singer. Thinking about life, “OMG, life is so complicated. What should I do? Should I try to read a book or search for a teacher? I am confused.” At least, I have some information due to my education. I have some answers to my questions. I have the luck and the blessing to be in contact with Buddhism and with some people.
I have only seen Lama Yeshe in photos and videos. And I love him very much. He is my best friend. He helps me a lot. Thanks to him, I have the luck to return.
What are your future plans?
Ösel: Right now, I am organizing a pilgrimage to India with Beatrix. [The pilgrimage took place in April 2015.] She is the work designer and also the organizer for the pilgrimage. Please, if any of you want to know, this is publicity time. (Laughter) We are organizing a pilgrimage to India, starting with Delhi, then to Dharamsala. In Dharamsala, we will be staying at Tushita Meditation Centre, then visiting Norbulingka and proceeding to the mountains. We will be going to Bodhgaya, Mahabodhi Stupa, Vulture’s Peak, Nalanda, Varanasi, Sarnath, Lumbini, Kathmandu, Kopan Monastery and Kopan Nunnery and thereafter Boudhanath and Swayambunath and Mahakala Caves. There will be talks along the way.
The group will be small. Because it is the first time I’m doing this, I want it to be as smooth as possible. But I also want to warn you, it will be hard practice and not just happy, happy. You have to do some hard work and put your mind into practice. It is going to be a practical way and will last for a total of 15 days.
And this is the first pilgrimage I am organizing, and I do not know whether it will be the last. Hopefully, it won’t be the last. But you never know. So, this is the opportunity to invite you and also to tell your friends. That is my project now. I think it will be a practical way to help people and at the same time form part of my practice, to donate to monasteries and to other projects we have.
Beatrix also knows Ayurvedic therapy. We hope to start an Ayurvedic school because medicine is important education for people. Ayurveda is one of the early medical systems dating back thousands of years. The other thing for me is to create an education system to not only teach you how to work, but also teach you how to live, basically. That’s my future idea. And maybe do a movie. I want to do a good movie, that is why I want to take my time. It will be about quantum mechanics, quantum physics, and emptiness coming together, through graphics. I don’t know. That’s an idea for the future. Thank you, Thank you. I am leaving Malaysia very soon but I feel very strong connection with the center. I want to thank everyone.

On April 12, 2015, Ösel Hita led a small group people on a once-in-a-lifetime “Universal Pilgrimage” to India and Nepal. While the itinerary called for visits to monasteries, holy places, and an exploration of Tibetan Buddhist culture and history, an unexpected experience came to participants when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25. All in the pilgrimage left Nepal unharmed and the two weeks leading up to departure were filled with laughs, talks from Ösel, and many profound experiences in India and Nepal. While visiting Tara Nunnery, Ösel explained in a talk, “I don’t want to create followers, I want to create leaders.”

Tenzin Ösel Hita Talks to North American Regional Meeting
In May of 2013, participants of the North American Regional Meeting, which took place in Portland, OR, were delighted to hear a motivating talk from Tenzin Ösel Hita. In this talk, Ösel shares his wisdom on many topics such as the FPMT organization, how to work harmoniously with others, how to think about offering service, and he fields questions from the audience.
“Life sometimes puts tests, brings tests. So in those situations we have to keep our cool, not think selfishly, we have to be humble, we have to be open, we have to work together as a community. In that way we create a harmonious community, we create the foundation so that other people are attracted to that energy. And then, slowly, slowly, keep growing, growing, growing…. Many people think the purpose of life is to have a good job, to have a family, nice car, and then have some heritage to give to the children. And basically they struggle their whole life like that. And then when it is about time and they see they will pass away soon, they start having stress, about ‘Wow… What have I done with my life?’
The Big Love Fund was established to provide financial resources to support the educational endeavors of Ösel.

On February 19, Tenzin Ösel Hita, the recognized reincarnation of FPMT founder Lama Yeshe, made a surprise visit to Malaysian center Losang Dragpa Centre to participate in its Guru Puja for Losar, Tibetan New Year. Just before the puja began, Ösel gave a short talk, which was transcribed by Carolyn Chan and edited by Yeo Puay Huei and Mandala for publication on FPMT.org:
“I just wanted to mention something quickly. The prayers that you are reciting refer to emptiness. I read somewhere not so long ago that quantum mechanics actually says 99.999% of atoms are empty. When we talk about material things, that which we can really touch or is tangible is only 0.001% of the atom. This means that if only the tangible parts of all the atoms of human beings were put together, all 7 billion humans would fit in a single sugar cube. Can you imagine that? Scientists are saying that all 7 billion humans could fit in a sugar cube. That is how ’empty’ we are.
“It is very funny how in this age, spirituality and quantum mechanics are coming together. Their paths have finally crossed. We are living in an age, a very, very big crystal age where thousands of years have passed and people have evolved a little bit. Times have changed: science has evolved, spirituality has evolved, but people are not ready for this kind of information.
“Three thousand years ago in Egypt, there was a pharaoh called Akhenaten. He started a revolution because he could not agree that there were many gods. He tried to explain to the people that the real god is within yourself. You possess the path within yourself. He was way ahead of his time. People did not understand. People were not prepared for that. So there was a huge revolution. Now here, 3,000 years later, we are actually ready for this kind of thinking. We have passed the Dark Ages, we went through the Middle Stone Age, we have been through World Wars. Now, finally people have the means to see all of these and learn from past mistakes. So, we are very lucky to be here at this age, today, everyday; this moment is very lucky. Of course, we think of the time as it is. Time has changed as it is.
“When talking about spirituality, we say that time is precious. We are here, with the precious human rebirth, possibly only once because they say human rebirth is like a turtle which comes up from the ocean bed only once every 100 years. In that vast ocean is a floating ring and this turtle comes up only once every 100 years. What are the chances of it placing its head through that ring? That is how difficult it is to get the precious human rebirth. That is the metaphor Tibetan Buddhism gives us to understand how lucky we are. This is something for us to cherish all the time.
“But then, we live in a society where the education system teaches us always to cherish ourselves and to think about ourselves, ‘me, me, me,’ right ? Capitalism is based on that. If people stop thinking like that, capitalism will fall apart. So, I am not saying this is good or bad, I am only saying it is good to be aware of this. Because the moment we stop only cherishing ourselves, we can actually start cherishing other people. When it really happens, it really starts feeling good. If everybody did that, thinking about the person next to you before you think about yourself, what a beautiful, lucky place. There will be no war, no famine, no hardship. You should really think about this and check it out. The more you think about yourself, the more you are going to suffer. If you think about the person next to you more than yourself, all you have is happiness. Your well-being will be linked to the universe, linked to karma and linked to human mind. Buddhism says this, so I do not have to say it. All of you know it. I think this important point should be put into practice and not just doing meditation or reading a book or coming to a puja, although these are also very good in making imprints and keeping us on the right path.
“The most important moment is when you put this cherishing others into practice, then it is like the phrase, ‘When the shit hits the fan,’ it spreads everywhere; it’s a strong metaphor! Keep the middle path. Think about the other person more than yourself. Even if you are suffering, forget about that. Think about the person next to you. For me, it is very easy to say, but very difficult to do. I also have a lot of suffering, difficulties and many frustrations. When these happen, I would do my best to think about the other person. But even then, it is so hard. After I make all the mistakes and mess up everything, I sit down and think, ‘Ah! I wish I had thought about it before. Now it is too late.’ Still, you can learn from your mistakes and slowly, slowly make an effort to be a better person and try to make the person next to you happier. This is my advice from my experience and difficulties that I have gone through. We are all going through this in the same way. So it is not like I am speaking and you think I am enlightened – blah, blah, blah – because I am not. (Laughter) I am of the worst quality.
“You know we cannot change the world, but what we can do is change ourselves. And that is the first step. So, we focus on that, OK? That’s the first step.”

If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to not harm them.
