      • Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition

The FPMT is an organization devoted to preserving and spreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwide by creating opportunities to listen, reflect, meditate, practice and actualize the unmistaken teachings of the Buddha and based on that experience spreading the Dharma to sentient beings. We provide integrated education through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed into their highest potential for the benefit of others, inspired by an attitude of universal responsibility and service. We are committed to creating harmonious environments and helping all beings develop their full potential of infinite wisdom and compassion. Our organization is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa of Tibet as taught to us by our founders Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche offering puja.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche, through the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund, recently offered US$3,469 to the FPMT Puja Fund to support the ongoing amazing array of pujas and activities that are continuously offered and dedicated for the success of FPMT, the health and long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and all of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s gurus, as well as all FPMT students, benefactors, and to all beings.

The extensive range of practices and pujas that are offered in India, Nepal and around the world through the Puja Fund is astounding. As Charitable Projects Coordinator, Ven. Holly Ansett, commented, “It is like Rinpoche has taken on the personal responsibility to care for all the main holy objects in the world on behalf of FPMT.”

Supporting the Puja Fund is a high priority for Lama Zopa Rinpoche and he personally donated $65,000 to this project in 2013.

Rinpoche often mentions that much of the success of FPMT is due to the pujas that are happening all the time.

Jowo Buddha in Tibet

Every month the Puja Fund sponsors the offering of gold and robes to the most holy Jowo Buddha Statue in Tibet.

For example, the following are offered through the Puja Fund:

  • Annual 100,000 Tsog Offerings to Padmasambhava
  • Annual recitation of 100,000 Praises to the 21 Taras
  • Annual recitation of the Kangyur
  • Monthly extensive Medicine Buddha Puja
  • Monthly Extensive Hayagriva Puja
  • Monthly offerings to the Bouddhanath and Swayambhunath stupas
  • Monthly offering of robes and gold to the Buddha statues in Tibet and Bodhgaya
  • Incredible array of pujas and offerings during the 15 days of Losar
  • Incredible array of pujas and offerings during the month of Saka Dawa
  • Incredible array of pujas and offerings during Chokhor Duchen

Ösel on his way to begin studies in Hawaii!

Occasionally Ösel shares his thoughts and experiences on his Facebook page. In this update, he gives discusses the role every action has on our experience of life.

Life has so many ways of appearing to us. There is such complexity in each moment, each sensation we receive and create. Are we even aware of each passing second, and each experience, which combined, makes what life is for each of us? We may be very subtly aware, but I don’t think we really assimilate how important every action we do is; how habits are so powerful in our daily life. How these “actions” multiply incredibly every time we repeat an action and create the habit. Habits are so strong in our lives. That is why we must be very aware of our habits, and if we feel we are not on the right path towards understanding our inner being, towards nourishing our body and minds, towards helping ourselves and others become more functional, emotionally balanced, peaceful, loving, kind, and joyful; then we must check our habits and focus on what we want to accomplish in the big picture and the long run.

My thoughts are similar to yours. I can identify with emotions humans may have felt in some great moments of their life. I can imagine what it must have been like for the explorers who were discovering something new for themselves and the rest of humanity. Just like an astronaut, who is moving into a new place, a new dimension. What is different from everything else? We are so complex, and each of our organs means so much to our lifestyle. Each breath we take means so much for the next couple minutes we live. Each bite of food we eat, every time we speak, every time we walk, every time we blink. All those moments are so small in our daily life, but yet so big and important. And these are all actions we do consciously. I guess life is so dependent on so many tiny details, that we don’t realize how interdependent on everything else we are every second of our parallel lives.

Thank you everyone for your love and kindness, really appreciate it! Just turned 29 a couple weeks ago.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Letter to the Nuns of Tashi Chime Gatsal Nunnery

Read all posts in Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund, Supporting our Lamas.
2o13n_325

The nuns of Tashi Chime Gatsal Nunnery, Nepal, are sponsored to complete two 100 Million Mani Retreats each year through the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund.

Every year since 2009, Lama Zopa Rinpoche has sponsored the nuns of Tashi Chime Gatsal Nunnery to complete one and now two 100 Million Mani Retreat (100 million recitations of the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM). This is offered through the kindness of a benefactor and the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund. To date the following has been sponsored:

  • 2009: One retreat was sponsored during Saka Dawa
  • 2010: One retreat was sponsored during Saka Dawa
  • 2011: One retreat was sponsored during Saka Dawa
  • 2012: Two retreats were sponsored over Saka Dawa
  • 2013: Two retreats were sponsored beginning on Lama Tsongkhapa Day

In addition to the 100 Million Mani Retreats taking place over the next six months, the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund is offering all the cost of food to all the nuns for this period as well as the cost of a very qualified geshe to stay during the retreat in order to give lam-rim teachings. This is very important for the nuns’ studies. The retreat lasts three months and about seventy nuns participate. Each nun doing the recitations receives a small offering and the nunnery also receives an offering. This is the main means of support for the nuns and the nunnery.

The nunnery has also managed to save a little from the last five years of offerings to rebuild the nunnery kitchen.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche wrote a letter to the nuns encouraging them in their efforts and explaining why these retreats and their other Dharma practices are so imperative and beneficial.

“My concern is that the Dharma knowledge alone and experience to tame the mind does not produce a good heart. One does not get realizations of paths and grounds that is needed through meditating on the path along with collecting merits and purification of obscurations. Even if one does get a little education and then leaves the nunnery, then goes on to work for money. Then one gives up the ethics of the individual liberation vow that leads one to the state of liberation. I hope it won’t happen like that….

“Since the start of reciting 100 million mani mantras, because of this all the surrounding areas will have rain on time and good harvests. It happens just like the story of the four harmonious friends. This is the sign that you all did good practice by reciting the 100 million mani mantras. And also it is the blessing of Arya Avalokiteshvara [In Tibetan: Chenrezig]….

You are welcome to contribute to the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Fund which supports these yearly retreats.

FPMT had the incredible fortunate to make offerings for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the conclusion of this year’s Jangchub Lam-Rim teaching event at Sera Je Monastery. Lama Zopa Rinpoche was present and offered a giant silver Dharmachakra, a beautiful White Tara thangka made of pearls, and over US$20,000 on behalf of all FPMT centers, projects and services.

Each year FPMT is committed to arrange or be an official benefactor for His Holiness’ long life puja. Over twenty years ago, Lama Zopa Rinpoche requested for this to happen annually. Please rejoice!

In January, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave many oral transmissions and teachings to school children from the Ngari Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Ladakh, India. The school was set up by the monks of Ngari Khangtsen at Sera Je Monastery in South India. The children were brought to Sera Je for the recent Jangchup Lamrim teachings by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Rinpoche, through the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund, is offering food to all the children (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) this year. The cost is 10,000,000 rs ( US$15,873). This is the second year that Rinpoche has been able to make this offering.

The  children at the Ngari Institute are orphans or have come from very poor families. They follow the standard government educational curriculum during the day and learn about Tibetan Buddhism and culture during after-school hours.

Rinpoche’s assistant Ven. Roger Kunsang reported that the children have memorized many prayers and Lama Chöpa and “they know all the tunes!” (See video below.)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche Offers US$12,106 to Two California Stupas

Dagri Rinpoche making offerings to Lama Zopa Rinpoche at the long life puja offered to Rinpoche at Land of Medicine Buddha, September 2013.

Following the long life puja offered to Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Land of Medicine Buddha, CA, USA, on September 29, 2013, Rinpoche offered US$12,106, toward the completion of two stupas being build in California.

US$6,053 was offered to the Stupa to Minimize Harm, a stupa to minimize harm caused by possibly earthquakes on the coast of California, and US$6,053 was offered to a new stupa being built at Land of Medicine Buddha.

If you build stupas or statues to inspire people, without even teaching Dharma, for however many hundreds and billions of years the holy object lasts, it continues to liberate many sentient beings every day, freeing them from the lower realms, causing them to actualize the path liberating them from samsara and bringing them to enlightenment. Even if after you die you are in another universe, in the hell realms or a pure land, wherever you are the stupa or statue that you built is continually benefiting sentient beings. It is incredible how you can continually benefit sentient beings by having built a stupa.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche is well known for his extensive and beautiful offerings. The Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund sponsors Sangha to make thousands of light and water offerings daily in Rinpoche’s residences in the United States. Sangha offer extensive prayers for the entire FPMT organization and all its projects, students and benefactors as well  as all sentient beings.  Gorgeous flowers adorn Rinpoche’s garden– an offering for all. You can enjoy an entire photo gallery devoted to this. Here we include a few of these photos. Please rejoice in these beautiful and abundant offerings!

Daily offerings are made this the Medicine Buddha altar at Rinpoche’s California residence.

We are not aware of the limitless skies of benefits we achieve from the practice of offering, what we can achieve and enjoy from life to life. Even while you are in samsara, you enjoy good rebirths, wealth, and every happiness. Even just the samsaric perfections are amazing, without adding all those incredible realizations that allow us to offer deep benefit to sentient beings, liberating them from oceans of samsaric suffering and its cause, delusion and karma.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche taking transmission from Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche, with Ven. Tsenla and Ven. Yeshe Khadro offering tsog. Bodhgaya, January 2012.

The Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund was very happy to sponsor the travel and first year of college tuition for Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche. Lama Zopa Rinpoche very much wanted to make this offering of support to Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche and his studies.

It is a high priority of Lama Zopa Rinpoche to offer support directly and indirectly toward the next generation of Dharma teachers.

This support can be annual offerings toward food expenses or donations toward projects or specific needs, such as contributing to the building of the incarnation’s monastery, labrang (house), geshe degree, education etc.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche tries in whatever way he can to support the next generation of teachers who will continue to hold the lineages and pass on the Dharma.

You can read more about Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche’s inspiring past life.

You are welcome to offer any amount to this fund which supports the next generation of Dharma teachers.

Robes Offered to Resident FPMT Geshes & Western Ordained Teachers

Read all posts in Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund, Ordained Sangha.
DSCF1387

His Holiness the Dalai Lama with Lama Zopa Rinpoche and 27 geshes, who serve as resident teachers in FPMT centers, during the 2007 Geshe Conference organized by FPMT.

In 2013 Lama Zopa Rinpoche, through the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund, was extremely happy to offer robes to all of the resident geshes and western  ordained teachers offering service at FPMT centers around the world.

Tremendous thanks to Kopan Monastery and Claire Isitt for helping to arrange this.

If you were Sangha but you didn’t wear robes, then people would not know [that you were ordained], but with robes on there is no question. That is how the robes have such incredible benefit for the mind. It is planting the seed for enlightenment when people show respect to your wearing of the robes, or to the robes themselves: This is planting the seed of liberation, and is a way of benefiting sentient beings…

—Lama Zopa Rinpoche, conversation with a monk about the benefits of wearing robes

Lama Zopa Rinpoche has requested that this offering be made each year as a small token of thanks for the incredible service offered by these teachers to FPMT  through teaching Dharma in the organization’s centers.  In 2013 robes were offered to 43 FPMT registered ordained teachers.

Please rejoice in the service offered by these teachers and also in the offering of robes made to them.

You are welcome to contribute  any amount to support the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund:

Lama Zopa Rinpoche was very happy to make an offering of US$10,000 toward a new life-sized statue of Lama Yeshe which Vajrapani Institute, Boulder Creek, CA, USA is having built. This will be the second life-sized statue of Lama Yeshe commissioned by Vajrapani Institute.

DSC03020

Lama Zopa Rinpoche and director of Vajrapani Institute, Fabienne, discussing the art for the new Lama Yeshe statue.

In February 2011, Vajrapani Institute asked Lama Zopa Rinpoche for advice regarding how to create the causes needed for the retreat center to further flourish and benefit many beings. Rinpoche recommended them to commission another statue of FPMT’s founder, Lama Thubten Yeshe.

Rinpoche also added that Vajrapani’s future new meditation hall should contain one-thousand statues of Lama Yeshe! This statue will act as the prototype for smaller ones to be made available.

The budget for this statue is estimated at US$20,000. Please rejoice that Lama Zopa Rinpoche has offered half of funds needed to complete this beneficial statue.

You may donate any amount to the Lama Zopa Rinpoche Bodhichitta Fund which allows Rinpoche’s compassionate charitable activity to flourish:
